Reality tv, sitcoms and dramas on today’s cable stations are varied across the board. From shows such as Franklin & Bash, a dynamic legal duo with a mixture of drama and comedy, to shows that have been on for decades such as Law & Order, the myriad of options for those who enjoy legal shows on TV can fill up your DVR in no time. But how accurate are these comedies and dramas on TV?
Law & Order
Although some of the plot lines for this TV series are a bit far fetched, overall the accuracy of a show like Law & Order is pretty spot on. Of course, it’s darn near impossible for a case to close so quickly like it does on the show, the series of events, detective work involved, intricacies of the case, and procedure of law is very well scripted. It’s obvious this is the work of a few legal experts and writers. Many of the cases featured are literally ripped from the headlines. The show has been running strong since 1990, providing 23 years of episodes to enjoy.
The Good Wife
Another legal drama that relies on headlines to make up it’s story lines, thus creating at least somewhat accurate portrails of real crime. Some experts have said that the show really doesn’t portray judges accurately, often casting them as unreasonable and illogical. LawSchoolPodcaster.com listed it as one of their favorites, and I tend to agree. The show is fairly accurate, identifies with a core audience both male and female and provides accurate depiction of how the courtroom and outside courtroom proceedings are conducted. Although many of the situations presented “rarely happen”, they are good for TV as they showcase off-the-wall types of cases similar to other law dramas such as Law & Order.
Franklin & Bash
What does TNT have to offer in the way of legal dramas and comedies? Franklin & Bash as well as repeats of Law & Order. This show provides a unique and funny take on how thirtysomething year old attorneys deal with interesting cases. With a certain flair exuded in the courtroom, the two main characters lead quite interesting lives in this LA based comedy sitcom. While the cases are somewhat accurate, this show does utilize a bit of the imagination when coming up with legal scenarios. In most courtrooms their antics and banter might not be appreciated, and frankly may cause some judges to hold them in contempt. Overall, however, if you want a good laugh watch Franklin & Bash.
Drop Dead Diva
This show is a big hit on Lifetime and after a few seasons has garnered quite the following. The main characters story line, she’s an ex model who died and was reincarnated into Jane a successful attorney, is very far fetched however the cases that she has are very much real. Hitting the female demographic, the show has seen cases that deal mostly with women’s rights and issues specific to female interest groups. Lots of laughs in this drama comedy on Lifetime, the accuracy of cases is pretty good. However, similar to Franklin & Bash some of the antics in the courtroom certainly wouldn’t be accepted in today’s court of law.
