Audiology is the study of hearing disorders. Here’s a quick look at ten reasons why it’s cool to study audiology:

  1. You get to help people. You will spend your life’s work assisting people to receive or retain the magic of sound in their lives.
  2. There is a range of different degrees that you can get. You can get certificate program degrees to work as an audiology assistant or you can get a degree as advanced as a doctorate. There are many different audiology programs to choose from.
  3. It offers a nice balance of people work and paperwork. Audiologists get to do a lot of neat research but they also work hands-on with people.
  4. You can take classes on campus or online. You can go to a traditional school or to an online medical school to get your degree in audiology.
  5. It is possible to write about your work. This is true of most careers but there are a lot of opportunities to write interesting journal articles if you’re an audiologist.
  6. You learn to appreciate your own hearing. You are reminded every day of the importance of your hearing which allows you to really appreciate this sense in your own life. Music will have a whole new meaning for you if you become an audiologist!
  7. You can have patients of all ages. You can specialize in infant hearing loss or hearing loss for the elderly or you can accept a range of different patients.
  8. You will be paid well. Audiologists earn a decent salary.
  9. Audiology is a recession-proof job. Well, it’s not entirely recession-proof but it’s a job that is less dependent on the economy than most because it’s based on a human need rather than human desires.
  10. You will have a chance to work with interesting people. The co-workers and people you come in contact with in your professional life will include teachers, counselors, musicians and other interesting folks. It’s a fun job!
