The Girl in the Window

This is an amazing story that has a happy ending (which is why it is Just Cool). A woman ignores her daughter for years in a house. The house is filled with trash, feces and bugs. Police take the girl at age 5. That is 5 years of neglect. There has been no interaction, learning or development in the first 5 years of her life. Truly a heart wrenching story that shows the worst of humanity and yet the power of love. Click on the picture to read an amazing story.

My first reaction was how can a mother let that happen to her child. But after reading the complete article I now ask myself, how can a society, their neighbors, let a situation get so out of hand without reaching out to help, or get help for such an obviously helpless and out of control family.
By nature I am against big government and overly nosy neighbors, but we have a responsibility to be our brothers keeper. the easy answer is to say hang the mother, but I think if blame is to be constructive as a result of this unbelievable story it should lie with the society that let it happen.
And the example set by Dani’s new parents should be a lesson for all of us. We are our brothers keeper.
