A White Black Bear?

This picture was taken near Gordon, WI a few years ago.

Not just any mother bear and her cub, but a black bear with a white cub. I don’t know how rare it is for a black bear to have a white cub but at least we can say we’ve seen it no matter how rare it is!  Since there seems to be no sign of a pink nose or eyes, I would say that it is not an albino.  This is not a doctored picture.

This is probably what is also known as a Kermode bear. It is a genetic variant of regular black bears. They are common in parts of British Columbia and a reserve has been created to protect them.

The eyes do not have to be pink or red to be albino. Albinism has different phases. It’s common for albinos to have blue eyes.
