Getting Over my Fear of Guns

gun Like many other Americans, I am afraid of guns.  That might sound kind of silly coming from someone that really never held a gun in their hands at all, but for me, I guess the fact that I didn’t understand how to use them really bothered me.  What would happen if I was in a life or death situation where I could save myself if I could pull the trigger and I was too scared to do it?

Being the control freak that I am, I decided that I needed to deal with my phobia and prepare myself for the worst case scenario.  But I wasn’t feeling so excited that I wanted to pick up a gun right away – I needed to take baby steps.

My great friend Steve suggested that I come out with him and his buddies to shoot a few rounds with an airsoft gun and see how I would handle it.  I learned that they were essentially replicas of real guns, but they shot plastic pellets.  Plastic didn’t seem to scary to me, so I thought I would try it.

After squeezing off a few rounds, I found myself hooked – it wasn’t until two hours later that I had enough.  As it turns out, guns really aren’t that bad if you know what you are doing.

I still have a long way to go, and I will have to try out a real gun at some point, but I feel that I made some good progress in alleviating my fears of guns today.

Guns are tools to keep us safe and to keep us free. Like any tool it can be used for evil and cause hardship and pain in the wrong hands. In the right hands it will be there when the wrong hands come calling. “I’d rather have it and not need it…than need it and not have it” is how the cliche goes. Kinda’ like a Swiss army knife.
