Hydroptère Reaches Incredible Speeds
By JustCool on Dec 2, 2007 in Cool Sports, Cool Travel, Cool Videos
The Hydroptère is a French designed experimental sailboat. Its multihull design, which makes use of hydrofoils, allows the sail-powered vessel to reach high speeds on water. The 60-foot sailing yacht is able to rise up and glide over waves instead of running through them allowing it to reach incredible speeds. When the wind is high enough the boat acends out of the water on ailerons which stay in contact with the water while the rest of the boat hovers over the waves.
The yacht has achieved two world records: 41.69 knots (48mph) over a distance of one mile, and 44.81 knots (51mph) over 500 meters. On January 27, 2007 the Hydroptère attained a speed of 47.2 knots. No engines! Just the wind!!
